MD General Practice & Emergency Medicine,  as HOD  is continuing from  20 June 2018 AD .and  Our Dept has been already running programme of DM Emergency Medicine course first in South East Asia since Sep 2011 AD and also first Post Graduate Programme MD (GP EM) from 1982AD in this country, because of the high demand of such in  Ministry of Health, Nepal Govt for all districts of Nepal. Last year we started slightly limiting the numbers of GPEM ten Residents per year because of requests by the Medical Council, and this year 2080 comes to 6 residents because of 6 faculties.


However, among  average 43,185 patients per year in Emergency Services, we saw in observation ward 8577 (13.08%) . Among them 5284 ( 89.9%) of patients are discharged from observation ward and 218 (3.7%) are admitted in various wards of the Hospital , back to emergency 375( 6.38%).

Total 50373  patients got Services in 2074 to 2075 BS fiscal year from this Department, including observation ward 5877,  GP  39384, Staff Clinic 742 & General Health Check up Clinic 3770.

This department has been providing quality services since the establishment of the department in the TU Teaching Hospital since 1982 AD, to date 288 MD GP &EM graduated, including 24 students from the Christian Academic of Medical Science, CMC Vellore India whose certificate had been awarded from the Institute of Medicine. This was the only postgraduate program that has been a collaboration in India. Since establishing the emergency room in TUTH, General Practice & Emergency Medicine specialists are providing their services

This department started a General Health check-up clinic with facilities of blood draw and ECG within the clinic, and USG also in the same GHC clinic, making it very comfortable for those patients visiting for a General check-up, providing reports in two days. Since 2001,

(Category II: test including CBC, Sugar, urea, creatinine, uric acid, SGPT, lipfd profile, VDRL, urine RE, stool RE, ECG, X ray chest, USG, in 2900 rs and blood grouping. ( EHS add 500rs) foreigner other than SAARC 4900.

Category I CBC, Sugar, urea,, SGPT, VDRL, urine RE, stool RE, X ray chest, ECG, blood grouping, in 1700 rs. ( EHS add 500rs), foreigner other than SAARC 2700.

Various Academic Activities of the Department

  1. DM Emergency Medicine Program started in September 2011 with 2 seats. Till today, nine DM candidates have successfully completed the course in consecutive years 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Three of them are in the department as faculty members. Currently, there is 1 DM resident in the 2nd year, and 1 will be in the 1st year (2023 batch).
  2. MD GP & EM Post Graduate Program: Currently, there are 7 MD GP & EM students who appeared in the exam from the 2019-2022 batch. The total number of residents includes 3rd year: 8, 2nd year: 9, 1st year: 6 (1 dropped due to social reasons and went to the USA), making a total of 22 residents (MMC). Additionally, 8 medical colleges offer the GP & EM program, including NAIHS, UCMS, GMC, NMC, CMC, KIST, and JANAKI, with a total of 26 seats this year.
  3. MBBS Program: This department takes care of Junior Intern postings in the emergency room for 15 days on a regular basis. Each student has to present one bedside case before completing the posting. Marks obtained will be added to the surgery subject, and theory classes are conducted every Thursday.
  4. BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medical Science): The department provides academic training for a duration of 6 weeks.
