Department of Child Health

Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Sudha Basnet

Brief History of the Department

The Department of Child Health was established when Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) became operational in 1972. Initially, it provided clinical services and conducted academic activities at Kanti Children’s Hospital. In 2007, the pediatric service was relocated to its own building within the TUTH premises, inaugurated by Late Prime Minister G. P. Koirala, and preliminary OPD services commenced. This move was driven by the need to develop subspecialty pediatric services and provide multidisciplinary care in a more coordinated manner.

  • July 2008: Inpatient services started with a 30-bed pediatric ward, later expanded to 60 beds.
  • December 2012: 4-bedded Pediatric ICU and 6-bedded Neonatal ICU were established on the 4th floor.
  • August 2013: Independent Pediatric Emergency Service was launched.
  • High Dependency Units (HDU) with 5 beds each were introduced for critically ill patients.
  • Additional services such as Pediatric Endoscopy, Electroencephalography (EEG), and subspecialty clinics (Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology) were established.
  • The department collaborates with international institutions like the University of Bergen, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, CDC Atlanta, Oxford University, and WHO for research and publications.
